How to choose a good skateboard helmet
While it is important to know the best options available on the market, what and how to choose is even more important.
Here's a guide to help you choose the right skateboard helmet for you.
Before we begin, I would like to point out a sad reality that many of us consider skate helmets as an item that does not deserve a large investment. We try to save our money while it is the most important equipment in our skate. I highly recommend investing a few more bucks in a good product instead of taking any chances.
Fit
The most important thing for me is the fit of the helmet. You just can't buy a helmet that doesn't fit right and waste your time and money on returns and back orders.
To accurately measure your helmet size, use a tape measure. Start by measuring about 1 inch above the eyebrows or forehead and around the entire circumference of the head.
This gives you a perfect fit, preventing you from choosing the wrong size.
Different types of helmets and which one to choose
While there is one standard type of skateboard helmet, here are a few others available on the market for you to choose from as well:
full face
These are the best types of helmets that offer the highest level of road safety. Because your entire face is covered, there is no chance of your head or any part of your jaw hitting the ground in the event of an impact. This is perfect for those who love aggressive driving.
Children and Youth
For children, the Wiggle range of helmets are the best. If you are going to buy skate clothes for your kids, I highly recommend Wiggle helmets. They are best known for security standards.
Idleness
As the name suggests, these helmets look great, are extremely lightweight, extremely ventilated with thoroughbred racing features, but very expensive.
BMX
These helmets are available in full face and open face. The full versions offer plenty of protection and meet all the requirements of BMX racing, while the open face is made for flat riding and dirt jumping.
Mountainbike-casco
For added coverage, excellent ventilation and retention, mountain bike helmets are perfectly equipped with these features. If you love alpine skating, this is the helmet for you.
time trial
For races where time is critical you need the time trial helmet. The main benefit of this helmet is to give you aerodynamic advantages and protection when the weather is ticking.
aerodynamic road helmets
This is a recently introduced type that falls somewhere between a trial helmet and a vented helmet and is beautifully designed to give you freedom of movement, light weight and compact size, and aerodynamic benefits.
road helmets
This type of helmet is versatile and can be used for sports other than skateboarding, such as cycling, bicycling, etc.
Security
While it is obvious that helmets are designed to keep you safe, it is important that you make sure that they are 100% safe and guarantee protection. It should be made of a durable plastic outer shell and have a hard rubber inner shell that can withstand knocks and subsequent impacts.
ventilation
As we are all easily distracted by sweat dripping down our faces while skating and this can lead to a fall or possibly loss of balance while drying with our sleeves, adequate ventilation and protection from sweat is required.
Make sure the helmet you choose has adequate ventilation so your head stays cool while riding and you can focus on your balance while riding or performing tricks.
Straps and retention system
The last thing to look for in your helmet is the straps and retention system. The straps help keep the helmet firmly intact while allowing you to easily open your mouth to talk, drink, or eat that candy bar.
When it comes to straps, the ones that form a V shape below the earlobe are a must. You can choose helmets with regular straps.
Finally, the retention system must also be considered. You should be able to easily adjust it to your stable fit
Also make sure the helmet has enough padding to make it comfortable to wear and absorb sweat. Some helmets come with removable pads that allow you to easily wash and keep your helmet hygienic.
Why you should wear a skate helmet
- It doesn't matter how pro skateboarder you are. The moment you step on your board; You take risks because the control is no longer in the feet but in the board. Even if you've never fallen since you started skating, you never know when you're going to fall. It's better that your head never knows how hard concrete is
- You may not be an aggressive driver, but even at low speeds you can fall over, and a mild impact can severely injure your delicate skull. Your wrist or clavicle can heal easily, but your brain can't.
- Always make sure you buy a skate helmet and not a regular one. Each helmet is usually designed for a specific sport based on the physical activity required and the level of safety required.
- Make sure your helmet is certified and meets all safety standards. A non-conforming hull may be good and durable, but not trustworthy.
Several things to consider
- Color: If you are a picky person, go for some brands that offer multiple color options. I have listed several helmets that have over 10 color options to choose from. Most brands are limited to just two or three colors.
- Graphics – While helmets are branded, some come with fancy graphics and neon features at extra cost. You can pay extra and get them
verdict
That's it, dear skaters. Let me know if you need help with anything. I am happy to answer your questions in the comments section below.
