Preparations for the 107th Indy 500 have officially begun.
Colloquially referred to as "the month of May" - probably because "fourteen days of May" doesn't quite come off the tongue - the next 15 days consist of nine practice sessions, two days of qualifying and one no-go pole entry, a pit race and of course the Indy race itself 500 on Sunday, May 28. Together, NBC and most notably Peacock aired nearly 60 hours of speedway coverage.

Legge, Rahal got a concussion
They'll take Katherine Legge and Graham Rahaladditional 15 minutes of trainingin addition to the rest of the field to shake their modified cars on Thursday.Legge ran into Stefan Wilsonduring Monday's practice, sending both the wall and Wilson to the hospital with a broken vertebra that will rule him out of the race.
Rahal,after initially failing to qualifyin his normal Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda,will push Wilson's reinforcementsDreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet. The RLL Legge team was able to rebuild the original chassis of her damaged car. The track will be open from 16:30 to 16:45. to have Legge and Rahal out of the pits, down the back section and back into the pits to make sure the cars were fit for Friday's final "Carb Day" practice session.
Rahal will replace the injured Wilson
Brother Grahamreplaces Stefan Wilsonin Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet no. 24 after the British driversuffered a broken vertebrain an accident during Monday's training. Rachel wasdramatically left the fieldby Rahal Letterman Lanigan's teammate Jack Harvey in a desperate last qualifying round as the session ended on Sunday afternoon.
Legge, Wilson crashed during Monday's practice
The first accident in May occurred during the seventh practice sessionKatherine Legge and Stefan Wilson got tangled in turn 1with about 50 minutes left in the session. Running in a pack along the front stretch, Legge couldn't slow her car down enough and crashed into the back of Wilson, sending them both crashing into the wall.
Wilson gave the crowd a thumbs up as he was placed on a plaque before being transported to an inland medical center while Legge got out of the car herself. Track medical staff said Wilson was communicative and in good spirits and was taken to a local hospital for advanced imaging.

Harvey shocks Rahal at the last chance to qualify
Five minutes from the end of Sunday's last-ditch qualifying, Jack Harvey dropped out of the Indianapolis 500. At the end of what felt like his last run, he was still not in field 33. But the team and Harvey reached a final heat decision. , desperate driving without the luxury of engine cooling. Harvey crossed the finish line to make the final run with seconds left on the clock, passing Rahal Letterman Lanigan, Graham Rahal's teammate, who was sent off by 0.004s.
Indy 500 qualifying format
34 runners are battling for 33 starting spots in the 107th Indianapolis 500. Qualifying is split over two days, with most runners taking part in Saturday's seven-hour marathon. On Sunday there will be sessions for the last three places - and one elimination - for the top 12 and top six on penalties. The driver's average speed over the four laps determines his position.
1st qualifying day - Saturday, May 20

• After each car has had one chance to complete four laps, it may choose one of the two lanes for further attempts to improve its time. Lane 1 has priority access to the track, but teams must lose their previous qualifying speed to enter it.
II day of qualification - Sunday, May 21
Grid points 1-12 and 31-33 locked
•The first hour-long session features the top 12 cars in the race with designated places from 7th to 12th.
• The four weakest cars have one hour to determine who will and who will not compete in the race for places 31-33.
• Finally, the top six cars will have a 30-minute session to determine pole positions up to sixth.

We are entering the first week of training for the 107th Indianapolis 500,rain threatens to prevent two days of track running– the first two dates are Tuesday, May 16 and “Finger Friday” May 19. Otherwise, the forecast predicts low temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees with partly cloudy skies. But since this is the Midwest, conditions can change at any time.
