How tight should ski pants be? Should ski pants be tight or loose?
Last update on 02/11/2022
In this guide on how tight ski pants should be, we answer the question: should ski pants be tight or loose? We share our thoughts on how ski pants should fit both men and women, as well as why we always recommend base layer pants underneath. You'll learn why stretch is just as important as fit with ski and snow pants.
Before I delve into whether ski pants should be tight or baggy, I thought I should share what I currently have on my legs when skiing or snowboarding.
I always start with a base layer, I have a few different ones but they are mostly made of merino wool. So depending on what I'm doing I either wear ski pants or a ski bib over the top. I occasionally wear a pair of sweatpants over my base layer with a pair of waterproof hiking pants on top, but insulated snow pants are best.
If you don't wear base layers and prefer to rely on your ski pants, there may be some benefits to having a tighter fit which we'll cover below.
How tight should ski pants be?
Ski pants should be tight enough to insulate the legs, but loose enough to allow freedom of movement and fit over boots.
Of course, this is a general statement that does not apply in all situations, and there are subtle differences between men and women, as well as for different types of ski pants. Here are our recommendations for different people and types of snow pants:
ski pants for men
Do men's ski pants have to be tight? Ski pants for men should not be baggy or tight.
The waist should fit like a pair of hiking pants or jeans, but you can always wear a belt or suspenders. Your thighs and legs should be loose enough that when you squat down, the fabric doesn't pinch your knees or start to feel tight as you descend. The ankles of men's ski pants may seem too wide, but once you put on your ski boots, you realize you have to.
women's ski pants
Do women's ski pants have to be tight? Women have the benefit of different cuts including skinny, slim, tight, regular or loose fit.
Sometimes women's ski pants can feel a little tight around the thighs and buttocks. If the material is stretchy, that's generally fine, but if you prefer clothes with a slightly looser fit, you might order a size up or choose men's ski pants.
The waist of the women's ski pants is a little high, so you can order the standard size so that the waist fits you well. Some women's ski pants can feel a little tight in the butt and thigh, which looks good but doesn't always help you feel comfortable.
Dungarees, Bibs and Snowsuits
Bibs, bibs, and snowsuits can be slightly looser than ski pants because they don't need to be held in at the waist. It's still good to get a good fit so you don't have excess loose fabric around your arms. If your size is small, medium, and large with no options for waist measurements and lengths, you will need to rely on the manufacturer's guides.
Whysnow bibsAnd snowsuits are easy to overheat, zippers and ventilation become more important the tighter the suit fits. In icy snowstorms, it's good to have a tight-fitting ski suit that fits well, but if you're cross-country skiing, a looser suit may allow for better airflow.
cross-country ski pants
While it's easy to avoid breaking a sweat when skiing and snowboarding downhill with ski passes, cross-country skiers typically sweat 80% of the day and then spend the other 20% catching their breath and enjoying the ride. Therefore, Nordic and cross-country skiers do not need as much insulation.
Cross-country skiers move their legs a lot more than those just downhill, and therefore baggy pants tend to rub against each other. Tighter-fitting ski pants are better for cross-country skiing, as they don't get in the way or make annoying noises when going up the snow.
Snowboarders mainly usebaggy snow pantsbecause that's more the style and also because snowboard boots are thicker than ski boots. While skiers and snowboarders do a lot of squats while riding, snowboarders squat with a wide stance that requires more stretch in the fabric or more fabric to work with. This is the reason why snowboarders' pants are usually looser than skiers' pants.
Should ski pants be tight or loose?
In general, ski pants should be looser than tight.Thermal Base Layersthey are highly recommended for skiing or snowboarding and therefore your snow pants should easily fit over them. The perfect fit is loose enough to never feel tight and tight enough to keep you warm without restricting any movement. Here are some common questions about how tight ski pants should be:
What to wear under ski pants?
Under your ski pants, you should start with your underwear, and in addition, most skiers wear base layer pants, also known as long john thermal underwear. This base layer not only helps provide warmth, but also wicks away moisture and helps keep pants or ski clothing clean. Base layers are extremely comfortable and stretchy, making them the best under ski pants.
You can also wear things like your pajamas or somethingsweatshirtwhich add warmth but are not designed for a snug fit and are therefore more difficult to wear under ski pants.
How should ski pants fit on your butt?
How tight should ski pants be on your butt? Ski pants should fit as snug around your rear as a baggy pair of jeans. Women's ski pants tend to be tighter in the rear than men's ski pants, but that's mostly for looks. Do the squat test while wearing a pair of ski pants to see how tight they are.TRUEthey are in the ass
If you're wondering if your ski pants are too tight in the rear, they probably are. Unless you really want to show off your figure, my partner and I have always found baggy ski pants to be more comfortable than skinny ski pants, especially in the seat.
How should ski pants fit on your hips?
How tight should ski pants be on your hips? Ski pants should not be too tight around the hips when you try them on. About an extra inch around the waist allows you to layer your foundation underneath when you need it. Look for belt loops and suspender attachments, as these will allow you to go a little larger and still get the perfect fit around your waist.
How should ski pants fit on your thighs?
Ski pants should fit like hiking pants that are loose enough so that when you extend your leg they are not tight around the thigh. If you have muscular legs or thick thighs, make sure your pants don't fit too tightly when you squat on your skis. Women's ski pants (again) are sometimes designed to look tight around the thighs, but unless the pants are super stretchy, we recommend a looser fit that is perhaps a little less flattering.
Stretchy ski pants may be the way to go.
One thing I've learned about how tight ski pants should be is that the stretchier they are, the tighter they can be. The main problem with skinny ski pants is that they restrict movement, so if you buy super stretchy pants with a lot of spandex or lycra, they can be too tight. Stretch is something I now look for in most of my outdoor clothing, but especially when it's fitted to the body.
How long should snow pants be?
Again, a good estimate is to match the length of your favorite pair of jeans, then add an inch or two. The reason why your ski pants should be a bit longer than regular pants is that with ski boots you gain at least an inch or two in height. The more your ski pants cover your ski boots, the less chance they will ride up or go into the snow.
Are the ski pants small?
Ski pants are not small and are actually a bit big if they are insulated. The only brand of snow pants we found to be too tight for the recommended size was a pair of Helly Hanson insulated snow pants. Once you've found a pair of ski pants that fit you well, I always think you should keep them as long as you're happy.
What are skinny ski pants?
Skinny ski pants are basically pants that have a tighter fit than normal. They are usually quite athletic and figure hugging with articulated knees and some even extend to the outer shell. The benefits of skinny ski pants are that they look better on fit people and there isn't as much loose material to bunch up and rub against your other leg.
Can ski pants be too tight?
Ski pants can be too tight if you don't order the right size. You want to have a little room in the waist with a tight butt and then loose in the legs. When ski pants feel too tight around the waist, hips, or legs, it may be time to buy a new pair. If you're worried about ordering a pair of ski pants without trying them on, order a size up and try them on with a belt or suspenders. You may find that they are the perfect fit.
Why you should avoid tight ski pants
Ski pants that are too tight can restrict movement and cause discomfort during the day. The worst place for ski pants to get too tight is at the waist. If the pants feel too tight on the buttocks or thighs, bending over while skiing can seem like a risky game of wanting to rip your pants off today.
Another reason to avoid tight ski pants is that they don't circulate air around your legs and can make wearing base layers uncomfortable.
How to choose the right size ski pants?
yes orski pantsYou're looking to have a waist and leg measurement, so stick with a size you know works. If all your favorite pants have a 34-inch waist with a 34-inch leg, buy the same size ski pants.
If the ski pants you're looking for have a broader sizing system of small, medium, large, and extra large, always check the manufacturer's website.
If you are on the cusp of 2 different sizes, always choose the larger one and be prepared to wear a belt or suspenders. This allows you to always have room to dress under your snow pants if you are skiing in particularly cold weather.
ski pants x jumpsuit
It all comes down to personal preference and there really aren't any huge pros and cons to one or the other. Bibs ride up over the shoulders and offer a little more warmth to the lower torso, while also giving you more freedom around the waist. Ski pants, on the other hand, should be held on with suspenders or a belt, unless they fit properly.
I've recently started wearing bibs because they look better around the waist, but for most of my life, I've worn ski pants with nothing bad to say.
Suspenders Vs Belt for ski pants
Orthotics are common on the ski slopes and make a lot of sense with insulated snow pants, which are bulkier and heavier than typical mountain pants. If you haven't worn braces since you were a kid, you should give it a try. It's much more comfortable and practical than a belt, and when you're wearing a jacket over it, no one notices.
I don't wear braces daily, nor do I wear them while hiking or camping. But I wear them with snow pants when I'm skiing or snowboarding. Suspenders are more comfortable, practical and effective than a belt with heavy ski pants.
Insulated Ski Pants vs Hard Ski Pants
I mentioned earlier that base layer pants, then sweatpants, then some waterproof pants are sometimes worn instead of insulated ski pants, and here are the pros and cons of each.
Insulated ski pants are built for work and work great. They are usually completely waterproof and have good fleece lining and insulation. The right ski pants will also have useful features like ankle zippers, ankle gaiters, ventilation, and ski pass holders that make life on a ski vacation easier.
Layered base layers, sweatpants, and a waterproof shell are incredibly comfortable and warm. This also saves you from buying new snow pants if you don't already have one.
